The quaint Pine Rivers Heritage Museum resides within the lush grounds of Old Petrie Town which edge onto the North Pine River, north of Lawnton and south of Whiteside.
The museum is a beloved local institution superbly maintained by diligent curators who have toiled hard to create a largely interactive modern museum celebrating the local area.
The museum is a treasure trove of Pine Rivers Shire history, digging up the district’s past to present permanent displays and fresh exhibitions delighting visitors and engaging curious minds in a jaunt down Pine Rivers memory lane.
Pine Rivers region has a rich history of settlement, with pioneer ancestors resettling in waves of migration from the 1850s. A series of displays feature their stories, through oral histories, objects and dioramas.
The harvesting of timber, clay and stone were the founding industries that drove exploration and settlement throughout the district, providing the foundation building materials of our State. Enjoy historic film footage of early timber-getters and stonecutters, examine samples of the many timbers extracted from our forests, and view the local clays reformed as crockery, bricks and tiles.
Follow the Pine Rivers story through the eyes of Edgar Foreman, and meet his great-great-great granddaughter, Ellie. Enjoy historic film footage of early timber-getters and industries, experience an 1890s school classroom and get a glimpse into life before electricity and reticulated water in an original farm workers cottage, Yebri House.
Historic Yebri House was the original farm workers cottage owned by the Petrie family. It is a Campbell pre-fab kit house built in the late 1880s. The house has been restored and styled in the fashion of the 1920s, making it a wonderful glimpse into life before electricity and reticulated water.
The Museum is fully-air-conditioned, boasts conference/convention facilities, a theatrette for an audio visual historical experience taking you through 150 years of shire history and the premises is equipped with disabled parking, access and toilets. Open from 10am to 3pm Wednesday to Sunday.
Pine Rivers Heritage museum also now offer a low sensory setting for exhibition exploration in the form of a "quiet hour" every Saturday from 2-3pm.
Visitors with sensory needs can enjoy the museum at a less busy time of day with reduced noise, and a supportive environment.
For a quiet hour, lighting is reduced where possible, background music is turned off, phones and PCs are turned down, PA announcements are restricted to emergencies and closing announcements only, and conversations are kept low.
Keep a little piece of the past or present with you by visiting the museum shop. It features local history books and films, wooden toys and vintage games, and a curated range of handmade items by contemporary craftsmen.
