IKEA’s Green Energy Goals

Founder & Senior Advisor Ingvar Kamprad plans to have the new IKEA store operating completely ‘off the grid’ by 2020.

The new outlet has 1600 solar panels installed to produce about a quarter of the store’s power, joining IKEA’s nationwide grid of 19,000 solar panels and reducing IKEA’s carbon footprint and running costs.

Currently, the company’s Australian network generates enough energy to power 967 homes, or take close to 2500 cars off the road.

Composting, LED and Paper Pallets at IKEA Stores Brisbane

IKEA North Lakes’ green energy goals also include other forward thinking, environmentally responsible actions.

The North Lakes outlet uses newly designed paper pallets instead of wooden pallets to minimise shipping expenses and environmental impact, along with an integrated LED lighting system of 10,000 energy efficient bulbs consuming around 85% less energy than other lighting options.

It also operates two $80,000 food composters (taking heed from the Logan store). The new composters turn the food wastage produced by IKEA’s North Lakes and Logan outlets into fertiliser to be used by farms and schools all over the Sunshine Coast.
