It’s hard to know where to start when it comes to what you can see and do in the truly awesome region that is Moreton Bay. There are so many things to do near Brisbane and The Sunshine Coast that you'll want to stay forever! Whether it’s cultural diversity, natural beauty, activity or big events, you’ll find it here. On any given day you can choose to bask in the beauty of a Bribie beach, soaking up the sun while swimming in a rock pool, taking in a winery, shopping up a storm, or taking in the art and culture scenes of the many precincts in the Moreton Bay Region. Just get out there!
If you haven’t already discovered the beaches of Moreton Bay, you’ve got some work (or should we say play) to do! The best-known beaches can be found on Bribie Island. Woorim Beach is Brisbane’s closet patrolled surf beach, while there are plenty of other options for fishing or taking Rover for a walk. Take yourself on a beach crawl of Sylvan Beach, Bongaree Beach, Red Beach, Banksia Beach and Skirmish Point.
Redcliffe is also a popular spot for a swim. The Scarborough Foreshore, Suttons Beach, Margate Beach, Bells Beach, Redcliffe Beach, Scotts Point and Settlement Cove Lagoon are all lovely swimming spots.
If you’re looking for a more serene spot to cool down, the quiet rock pools of Cedar Creek provide the perfect respite.
This popular swimming spot is the perfect place for a splash, especially for young children.
Easy to access and explore, Stony Creek is a must visit when out at Woodford.
Behold the beauty of the Moreton Bay Region and find yourself on a bush walk, mountain bike ride or horse ride. Whatever your level of experience, you’ll enjoy immersing yourself in the natural surrounds Moreton Bay has to offer:
Ocean View Estate is a world-class winery, which is a world away from what you might expect in Moreton. Take a vineyard and winery tour and take a taste from the vats or wander through the vineyards, spread out a blanket and treat yourself to a picnic hamper provided by Ocean View. The restaurant always impresses with estate wines matched to your meal. Or maybe you’d just prefer a little wine tasting at the cellar door? If you’re not drinking you’re not forgotten. You can indulge in a Devonshire tea or a Merlo Coffee and estate-made chocolate truffle. This is one of the best wineries in the region and well worth a visit or even a weekend escape in one of the vineyard cottages, complete with spa and spectacular views. Weddings are also extremely popular at Ocean View Estate. Maybe you’ll say I do here, too!
For some seriously amazing ocean views and a couple of glasses of the best, The Dr Red Vineyard at Mt Nebo is a must-stop on the eastern side of Brisbane Forest Park. The vineyard is planted with over 1500 grape vines, coffee trees and olive trees so all tastes are covered. Take in the view of the ocean, Moreton Island and Samford Valley all just 35 minutes’ drive from Brisbane, ten minutes from The Gap.
If you prefer an antique crawl to a pub crawl, Moreton has some hidden gems for hunters like you!
Moreton may also surprise you if you’re keen to learn more in one of the region’s many museums and art galleries. The kids will also enjoy the experience with sections in each museum and art gallery just for them.
From privately owned to the regional art galleries in Moreton, you’ll be inspired by the creativity that’s emerging all the time from the region. Discover art from local artists as well as touring exhibitions that cover sculpture, ceramic, glass, jewellery, silk, printmaking, painting, photography and drawing.
From the region’s pre-European penal settlement to the pioneering families that established the farming and dairy communities of Dayboro, Samford, Woodford and Caboolture, Moreton has plenty to offer the history buff. Go back even further and discover a large collection of Medieval and ancient Egyptian antiquities, including illuminated manuscripts, stained glass and Roman pottery.
The Moreton Bay region does events REALLY well. From music festivals to winter art trails and kite festivals for the whole family, there’s probably something happening right now so get out your calendar!
Get your hippy on at the Woodford Folk Festival, the annual six-day event held from December 27th - January 1st.
This is a world music festival, with more than 1500 shows featuring local, national and international artists performing music, dance, theatre, comedy, arts and education.
Past big names have included John Butler Trio, Waifs, The Beautiful Girls and Beth Orton. There’s even a Children’s Festival within the festival!
This annual, authentic medieval event is held near Caboolture every July at the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology. Watch as brave knights take to the lists in the joust or be mesmerised by the hypnotic dance of the belly dancers. Or meander through the 60 medieval inspired market stalls, from beautifully crafted medieval weapons to armour, gowns, garlands and crafts.
The Ultimate Kids Weekend! Families will get swept away in the fun, colour and excitement of the annual Redcliffe KiteFest where kites of all shapes and sizes fill the sky. Redcliffe KiteFest gets bigger and better every year with a huge contingent of international and domestic kite flyers set to come together in Pelican Park.
Another spectacular event in the Moreton Bay region is the annual Redcliffe Sails Festival, which takes place on Good Friday on the foreshore of Suttons Beach on the Redcliffe Peninsula. You’ll also find yourself in the perfect position to take in the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race.
