Epic Hiking Trails near Brisbane over 10km

Time to strap on your hiking boots, slap on some sunscreen and fill up your water bottle, the Moreton Bay Region has a challenge for you. Test your endurance and break personal records when you take on these 10km+ hiking tracks near Brisbane.

Lake Samsonvale Trail – 10km Return

The picturesque Lake Samsonvale walking trail from Bullocky Rest to Forgan Cove weaves along the water’s edge. Stretching approximately 4.2km one way, you can extend this walk by starting out at Tukuwompa park, about 1km north of Bullocky Rest. Suitable for all fitness levels, we still recommend bringing along your trail walking shoes as this track is mostly dirt. As you walk or jog along, keep your eyes peeled, you may just be lucky enough to spot a koala up in one of the many trees that line the banks of Lake Samsonvale, and if you look out across the water you might see a pelican or two, amongst other waterbirds.

Maiala Aquila Loop – 24km Return

Strap yourself in for one of the largest walking tracks near Brisbane. Maiala’s Aquila Loop in D’Aguilar National Park is whopping 24km hiking trail in the Moreton Bay Region that may take walkers anywhere between 6-10 hours to complete. Starting at the Maiala day-use area, you’ll follow the Westside track past the Western Window and down steep stairs to a track junction.

Following a couple of management roads past the England Creek bush camp to the top of Northbrook Mountain, you’ll get spectacular views of the England Creek catchment. Continuing along England Creek road, you’ll eventually veer onto Lawton Road down to a saddle and up again before reaching the Westside track entry sign. The Westside track leads back to the Maiala day-use area.

Mount Nebo’s Cabbage Tree Range – 17km Return

You best wake up early or put aside half a day if you want to take on the Cabbage Tree Range Loop in Mount Nebo. Stretching 17km return, this north Brisbane hiking trail will take an estimated 4 – 7 hours to complete. This loop begins at the Mount Nebo transfer station, follows Dundas Road past the bush camp and on to Cabbage Tree Range Road.

Hopefully, you don’t mind some soggy shoes as you’ll be crossing Cabbage Tree Creek, onto Job 6 Road and up to Light Line Road bush camp. Eventually, you’ll reach Double Break, turning into Hammermeister Road which will lead back to Mount Nebo Road and the transfer station.

The Gantry Somerset Trail – 13km Return

Beginning opposite The Gantry, the Somerset Trail passes through scribbly gum forests, rainforest and dry open forest. About halfway along enjoy views to the west overlooking Somerset Dam and Lake Wivenhoe. Parking is available at The Gantry car park. Bring water as there is no drinking water available along the trail.

Grab your hiking shoes and peer pressure your friends into joining you as you take on new 10km hiking trails near Brisbane in the Moreton Bay Region.
