6 Top Spots for Mountain Biking Brisbane North Adventure

The Moreton Bay Region has some excellent mountain bike tracks suitable for both beginner riders and enthusiasts to explore. Mountain biking is an excellent way to experience nature and challenge your physical boundaries at the same time.

Each of the trail networks below are highly recommended. Be sure to wear a helmet as the topsoil in the region can be very gravelly, providing a challenging ride (in particular sections) even for the most experienced riders.

Remember to always ride within your ability and give way to others on the tracks.

#1 Bunyaville Conservation Park – Mountain Bike Riding Brisbane North

Due to its proximity to Brisbane CBD, Bunyaville is a very popular mountain bike trail network located within the Moreton Bay Region. There are 22kms of inter-connected trails covering ten separate mountain bike only single tracks.

It is best for mountain bikers to park at the Jinker Track car park and follow the trails which are numbered with clear signs and arrows along the way. The tracks are suitable for intermediate to advanced riders, as the terrain is quite steep in some sections of the park.

Bunyaville Conservation Park also has some excellent walking tracks and horse trails, so ride safely and be mindful when using the shared recreational trails.

#2 Bellthorpe National Park – Mountain Biking Brisbane North

Explore the excellent loop track along Branch Creek Road which climbs and descends through open eucalypt forests, rainforests and past tranquil creeks and streams. For a longer loop track option, follow Bellthorpe West Road, but remember to be aware of drivers enjoying 4WD adventures through Bellthorpe as you ride.

Stony Creek day-use area is located 15 kms north-west of Woodford on Fletcher Road, and is the perfect spot to begin and end this cross country trail. After your ride you'll be more than ready to cool off in the Stony Creek swimming hole.

#3 Samford Conservation Park – Mountain Bike Riding Brisbane North

Beginning at Lomandra day-use area, there are plenty of mountain bike tracks stretching across Samford Conservation Park. These tracks are a mixture of fire trails and well-maintained single tracks following the local ridges and gullies. Several of the tracks loop around Ironbark Gully picnic area, where there are toilet facilities, covered picnic tables and barbecues.

There are well maintained tracks which are suitable for children next to the car park at Lomandra day-use area. Just across Samford Rd, you will find the popular and picturesque Samford Valley Rail Trail.

#4 North Harbour Heritage Park – Mountain Biking Brisbane North

Set along 6km of North Harbour’s beautiful scenic river frontage in the Heritage Park area, this mountain bike trail near Brisbane is designed for beginners, families and intermediate level riders.

The tracks are open 6:00 am – sunset every day. The mountain bike trail parking and set off point is a great place to start or finish your day, fitted out with picnic shelters, water fountain and BBQs. Not too far from the North Harbour Heritage Park Compass Centre where you can find toilets and additional water facilities.

#5 Samford Valley Rail Trail – Mountain Biking Brisbane North

Combine history with fitness along this 8.3km gentle ride through the farming countryside of the Samford Valley. The fully sealed track begins at Ferny Grove Railway Station and continues towards Samford Village passing through Samford Forest. The trail then opens out around the foothills of Camp Mountain, with stunning views across The D'Aguilar Range.

The Samford Valley Rail Trail follows the disused Ferny Grove to Dayboro Railway line, which was closed following the Camp Mountain Railway Disaster in 1947.

As the trail follows the railway line it is suitable for beginner riders. If a shorter ride is what you’re after, it is possible to just cover small sections of this trail.

#6 Wamuran Rail Trail Loop – Mountain Bike Riding Brisbane North

Follow the old Rail Trail signs along this 28km loop track which passes through Wamuran State Forest. It is best to begin your ride at the end of Mylett Road, and it is also possible to extend the loop to include Woodford (13kms north of Wamuran), where the original Wamuran Station building is now housed.

The Durundur Historic Railway runs each first and third Sunday of the month, which is quite a sight to behold.
