Lake Kurwongbah | Kallangur

A peaceful expanse of water, Lake Kurwongbah is situated north of Lake Samsonvale and is surrounded predominately by privately owned residential acreage. This, often forgotten local beauty, has been featured on both National and International sports television, being the tranquil backdrop to the infamous ‘Lakeside International Raceway’, from 1961 to mid-2001.

Aside from its ‘racing history’, Lake Kurwongbah is home to a wide variety of birds, fish and native animals, making it the ideal retreat for those who love to get out on the water and enjoy nature.

Fishing at Lake Kurwongbah

Fishing is permitted at Lake Kurwongbah, though you will need to apply and book a permit before you head out. You can book permits through the Queensland Government Fisheries Department.

Fishing from the Shoreline

You can fish from the shoreline seven days a week, from Mick Hanfling Park (Torrens Road, Petrie) and Lake Kurwongbah Day Use area (Dayboro Road, Petrie). Make sure you have your permit with you to fish at Lake Kurwongbah, and check with SEQwater or Queensland Government Fisheries Department for any updates.

Fishing from a Boat

Fishing from power boats is not permitted, but you can fish from a paddle boat, such as a kayak, from Sunday to Wednesday. When fishing at Lake Kurwongbah you can expect to catch silver perch, golden perch and bass.

Boating on Lake Kurwongbah

Lake Kurwongbah is a shared recreational water sports zone. As of December 2017, paddlers and skiers were given access to the lake every day of the week though separated by zones. There is now an area for skiing and paddling with the club rowing course continuing in it's designated zone.

To ensure ease of use for all visitors, an additional paddle craft wash down facility was added along with another launch point established at Mick Hanfling Park. All recreation users are required to wash their watercraft to help prevent the spread of aquatic weeds

Power Boats

Now available for us every day of the week, all visitors using power boats are welcome to make use of the Lake Kurwongbah Water Ski Zone and Waterski Queensland. Contact the club if you’d like to learn more about water skiing on the lake. You cannot ski or use power boats on the lake unless you are affiliated with one of these clubs.

Paddle Boats

Public paddle craft use, such as kayaks and canoes, can visit the lake daily. Vessels can be launched from Mick Hanfling Park, off Torrens Road and the park also includes a wash down zone perfect for rinsing paddle boats after use.

Paddling around Lake Kurwongbah is a great way to spend a Sunday, or take in some exercise in the early morning before work. Approximately 3.2 square kilometers in size, the lake offers a great diversity of local attractions, from the picturesque landscape, to bird watching and of course fishing!

It is worth noting that most of the land around the lake is privately owned and landing your vessel on private land without prior consent is illegal. So make sure you have drinking water on board and some snacks to keep your energy levels up.

Take a Picnic

If you’re not planning a day on the water, Mick Hanfling Park is still a beautiful spot to sit and enjoy a picnic lunch. With ample parking, toilet block and picnic shelters, this big wide open park has the most stunning of watery backdrops. It's simply a great place to enjoy time with friends or even just relax and enjoy a good book.
