In a major win for the Moreton Bay Region, Redcliffe’s Dolphin Stadium will host the 2018 Rugby League Commonwealth Games Championship ahead of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

The announcement follows a successful bid by Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT), Moreton Bay Regional Council, Redcliffe District Rugby League Football Club and Redcliffe Leagues Club.

MBRIT CEO Shane Newcombe says he is thrilled with the outcome, which is set to put the region, and its world-class facilities, on the international sporting stage.

“Securing the hosting role for the Rugby Commonwealth Championship marks a significant win for the Moreton Bay Region,” said Mr Newcombe.

“It is good news for tourism operators, the local economy, as well as small business,” he said.

“The event will provide a boost to local tourism through an influx of football fans, increased visitor stays, and associated spending at restaurants, cafes and tourism attractions.”

Multimillion-dollar redevelopment works over recent years have seen the Redcliffe Dolphin Stadium grow to boast state-of-the-art training and development facilities, and significantly increase its combined seating capacity.

As part of next year’s flagship sporting event, Commonwealth nations will battle it out in a nine-aside competition during the event on February 23 and 24.

For the first time in the event’s history, it will also include a female championship.
